In this class, students will learn the traditional Mexican craft of piñata making with a contemporary slant. Several templates and all of the necessary materials will be provided to create and decorate your very own piñata. To celebrate the season, the focus will be on Day of the Dead and Halloween imagery. Students will be encouraged to put their personal touch on the process, and will leave the class with their own custom creation. The class will also include a brief overview of the history of the piñata, and how it became ingrained in Mexican culture.

Macabre Piñatas was born out of the love for Mexican Culture and an avid interest in the Occult. Traditional styles were combined with contemporary approaches to create unique piñatas that celebrate individuality and the beauty of the macabre.

Karla Muñoz was born in the ancient Mexican city of Puebla where she spent the first years of her life absorbing the rich cultural heritage around her. At a very young age, she emigrated to NYC and then in her late teens, she decided to pursue a career in the art of Body Modification. She currently works as a professional body piercer and continues to embrace the traditions that defined her childhood in Mexico.

Originally from Mexico City, Carmen Figueroa started her arts education at a young age. She attended National Fine Arts Institute, a competitive school where only a few students are admitted each year. At the age of 22, she moved to NYC to further develop her artistic practice. She then obtained an MFA degree in Printmaking from the City University of New York in 2012. Shortly afterwards, she decided to further develop her artistic skill by starting a career as a tattoo artist.

Tickets are non-refundable unless the event is canceled.
