Pernicious, Pestilent Revenants: The Void of Malevolent Undead Imagery in Medieval England

November 25 @ 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

| $8

An Illustrated Lecture with Candace Reilly, University of York

Date: Tuesday, November 25th
Time: 8pm
Admission: $8 ( Tickets Here )
Location: Morbid Anatomy Museum, 424 Third Avenue, 11215 Brooklyn.

A revenant is a person who has returned from the dead. In this talk, Candace Reilly will provide an interdisciplinary analysis of the revenant as a creature of monstrosity and corporeality as represented in twelfth and thirteenth century English chronicles. Depictions of the undead will be analyzed in a literary, historical, and archaeological framework, which gesture towards beliefs in necrophobia-extreme or irrational fear of death or dead bodies. She will also analyze the revenant from the perspective of contemporary optical and sensorial theories, suggesting a relationship between monsters, art, and medical practices.

Candace Reilly is a recent graduate from the University of York in which she received her MA from the Centre for Medieval Studies. Her research is primarily focused on the culture of death and dying in the High Middle Ages and the interdisciplinary connections between images of death and the public. Her forthcoming research is focused on monsters represented in medieval art and the properties of vision, reflection, and sensory interaction.
