The power of positive thinking is at once the most familiar and controversial philosophy of our time. Millions embrace the path of positive thinking yet this outlook on life is reviled by social critics who see it as a patchwork of namby-pamby nostrums that blind us to authentic social and economic complexities.

Tonight, two thoughtful observers and chroniclers of positive thinking-one a proponent, historian and spiritual writer Mitch Horowitz, and the other a critic, Guardian columnist Oliver Burkeman-will come together for a serious, no-nonsense encounter about whether positive-mind therapeutics represent the path to piffle, or an authentic commitment for searching people.

This latest installment in our popular Morbid ACADEMY series of dialogues promises to be one of the most interesting yet.

Oliver Burkeman is an author and journalist based in Brooklyn, New York. His most recent book is The Antidote: Happiness for People Who Cant Stand Positive Thinking, exploring the upsides of uncertainty, failure, and imperfection. He writes a weekly column in The Guardian on psychology and self-help culture, and is at work on a book about time, busyness, distraction, and the cult of productivity.

Mitch Horowitz is a PEN Award-winning historian and the author of Occult America and One Simple Idea: How Positive Thinking Reshaped Modern Life, which defends positive-mind mechanics as an effective and morally serious path. Mitch is a writing a new book, Mystery Achievement, on the practical uses of mind metaphysics. He and his wife raise two sons in Manhattan. Mitch hosts the Morbid ACADEMY series.

Tickets are non-refundable unless the event is canceled.
