To celebrate The Cure’s triple header at Madison Square Garden, we are going to celebrate the in best way we can! To kick off the night, Andi Harriman will present a lecture titled “Why Can’t I Be You?: Cure Videography in the 1980s” followed by a Cure dance party.
The Cure has been a seminal band in post-punk and goth’s history, lead by the red-lipped and kooshball haired Robert Smith with his innate ability to write the perfect pop song while still able to crush souls with his morbid outlook on life. Throughout the 1980s, the band’s music videos reflected the evolution of The Cure’s music from post-punk and proto-goth to synthpop to mainstream alternative. Smith became more comfortable in front of the camera as his hair got more unkempt and his outfits more oversized-claiming iconic status with his raccoon eyes and pale, deathly pallor. Through the decade, The Cure was infamously known to recycle band members, going from the duo of Smith and Lol Tolhurst for “Let’s Go To Bed” in 1982 to the six deep line-up for “Just Like Heaven” in 1987. In this lecture, Harriman will review the stories and impact behind some of The Cure’s most loved music videos and their importance to the 1980s goth and post-punk genre.
Andi Harriman is a 1980s music anthropologist as she writes, researches and documents this specific decade in history. She is the author of Some Wear Leather, Some Wear Lace: A Worldwide Compendium of Postpunk and Goth in the 1980s that has gained national and international recognition since its release in 2014. Harriman currently holds a BFA in Material Studies and Creative Writing from Virginia Commonwealth University and an MFA in Jewelry + Objects from Savannah College of Art and Design. She is a contributing writer to Post-punk.com and Lethal Amounts’ blog, a radio host, a prolific DJ and runs a monthly event in Brooklyn called Synthicide.
