Stanley B. Burns, MD and Elizabeth A. Most notably, The Art of Mourning at the Morbid Anatomy Museum, which features Dr. Burns’ postmortem memorial photographs, and also introduces Alice Lease Dana’s collection of memorial celluloid buttons will be discussed. Other current exhibits in New York City include, an exhibit of Nineteenth Century Japanese hand-painted landscape photographs, and Dr. Burns’ word-image Holocaust photographs.

This past year there were several other memorial photography exhibits including Memorializing Infant Loss in London. Showcased at the Metropolitan Museum of Art were photographs of Civil War wounded soldiers. Highlights from these exhibits will be presented.

Also discussed will be a preview of the soon-to-be-released Burns Archive book, “Stiffs, Skulls and Skeletons, Medical Photography and Symbolism,” an encyclopedic work documenting the use of bones, bodies and body parts in medical and cultural perspectives. A preview of the next three publications “Masked Fear: The Psychology of Gas Warfare Between the Wars,” “Nomonhan: Japan vs. Russia 1938,” and “Medical Marvels” will also be presented. Dr. Stanley Burns and Elizabeth Burns’ work on HBO/Cinemax’s 10-part series “The Knick,” directed by Steven Soderbergh and starring Clive Owen, has been heralded worldwide.
