Tonight, Suzanne Scanlan will discuss images of demonic temptation in late fifteenth-century Rome, when the Devil was believed to be an ever-present menace and witch hunts were expanding across Europe. She will focus on a series of eerie, life-size frescoes made for a community of religious women who lived, prayed and confronted their demons together. These paintings are particularly provocative - and disturbing - as demonic beings are portrayed as muscular male nudes who assault and ravage the community’s foundress in an ongoing battle for her soul.

Suzanne Scanlan is on the faculty of the Department of History of Art and Visual Culture at the Rhode Island School of Design. She specializes in the art and architecture of early modern Europe and her research focuses primarily on art and women in Rome.
