Photography is a well known medium to portray death since its invention. Photographic practices dealing with death and grief, far from disappearing, have been adjusting to the constant transformations of the attitudes towards death and the new possibilities of the photographic medium. Thus, photography of the dead is finding a new scenario online where the loved ones can make visible their grief.

In this illustrative lecture, we’ll go in a photographic journey through the different representations of death within the family and the intimate ground where the ones in grief are as protagonists as the dead portrayed.

Montse Morcate is an artist and photography professor at University of Barcelona. She is also coordinator of the center Francesc Català-Roca, espai de fotografia in the same city. Her recent research and art projects deal with the photographical representation of death, illness and grief, addressing different contexts such as their presence in the family album, the contemporary art project or the new practices online, among others. Currently, she is a Visiting scholar at Columbia University and Scholar in residence at the Morbid Anatomy Museum.
