Date: Monday, November 10th

From the covering of Adan & Eve’s pubic hair in classical art to representations of Samson’s loss of power (along with his hair) to Frida Kahlo’s “Self Portrait with Cropped Hair,” the symbolic meaning of hair in art has retained a deep, hirsute significance. The power of hair can also be seen in the decorative arts as we consider the vast popularity of hairwork in the 19th century.

Professor Karen Bachmann, Morbid Anatomy’s resident jewelry artist and the woman behind our popular Victorian hairwork classes, will explore the representations and fables of hair in art history in this evening’s illustrated lecture.

Karen Bachman is November’s Morbid Anatomy Museum Scholar in Residence. She is a fine jeweler with over 25 years experience, including several years on staff as a master jeweler at Tiffany & Co. She is a Professor in the Jewelry Design Dept at Fashion Institute of Technology as well as the SCHOOL OF ART & Design at Pratt Institute. She has recently completed her MA in Art History at SUNY Purchase with a thesis entitled Hairy Secrets:… In her downtime she enjoys collecting biological specimens, amateur taxidermy and punk rock.
