While the ancient Egyptian love of cats is very well documented, they also worshipped a number of different animals, many of which they made sure would follow them to the afterlife. From beloved pets to sacrificial votives to sacred animals we have a number of different and very well preserved animals that were intentionally interred in ancient Egypt – you could even call them the original taxidermists! This lecture will discuss the variety of reasons the Egyptians had for mummifying animals, the ways in which they did it, and sometimes – the ways in which they scammed their unsuspecting clients!
