In this lecture, art critic and author Nancy Hightower will showcase how the grotesque in art has changed in nature and purpose, from the grottoes of Nero’s Domus Aurea to its darker, more powerful position in contemporary society. She will also discuss of the ways in which artists have and do utilize the grotesque—this elusive intersection of humor and horror—to question and address the paradoxes, hypocrisies, and binaries of society.

Nancy Hightower received a PhD in English and Creative Writing from the University of Denver.She taught classes such as the “Grotesque and Writing about the Visual Art”s at the University of Colorado. Along with Carrie Ann Baade, she authored the Cute and Creepy Exhibition Catalogue in 2011, and from 2012-2013, and was the art columnist for “Weird Fiction Review.” Currently, she reviews science fiction and fantasy for “The Washington Post.”
