Tonight, join theremin virtuoso Dorit Chrysler for a special night devoted to the uncanny allure of the Theremin!

The evening will end with a performance and begin with a lecture in which Chrysler will recount the surprising and fascinating of this electronic instrument which, invented in 1919 by Russian electro physicist Lev Sergejewitsch Termen, generates sound without being touched. Notoriously difficult to play, it is one of the first electronic instruments that inspired the creation of synthesizers of future generation.

Although originally intended for classical music performance, the theremin instead found its success supplying ‘eerie’ music for countless motion pictures. It’s unique sound quality triggered by minuscule physical motions often invited notions of “the Voice of Madness or the Subconscious.”

Whether it is due to its unusual frequency and vibrato effects, or the difficulties of mastering its technique, the Theremin has never been a widely-played instrument. The instrument’s journey-and that of its inventor, who also created the first audio spying device “the bug”-is filled with mystery and would make a compelling spy novel.

Dorit Chrysler’s music has been described as the love child of Marianne Faithfull and Nikola Tesla, “with Jane Birkin as the nanny and Bjork as the wayward Girl Scout leader” (Paper Magazine). Dorit was born in Graz and resides in New York. She is the co-founder of the New York Theremin Society & started the Kid Cool Theremin School and is one of a few Theremin virtuosos worldwide. Her solo work ranges from electronic pop to film soundscapes. Lars van Trier used her compositions, and she has collaborated with such diverse acts as Elliot Sharp, Cluster, Chicks on Speed, Baby Dee, Faust, Marilyn Manson, Tocotronic and Lee Hazelwood.

Her last record “Avalanche” was produced by Anders Trentemøller and released on his Label InMyRoom. Her compositions have been commissioned most recently by the Venice Biennale ‘13 and MoMA. She produced a ten-piece Orchestra performance at the LA Disney Hall and has played at Lincoln Center, the Modern Arts Museum in Seoul, Karlskirche Vienna, MoMA, Louisiana Museum Copenhagen, Palais Tokyo Paris and the St.Petersburg Hermitage. She is holding a long term residency at Pioneerworks.org, center for arts and innovation, curating their music department.
