Striptease in Western culture has a long and complex global history. This illustrated lecture will address some of its most significant moments, from Byzantium to Las Vegas, through a 21st-century lens. Meet some of its most outrageous figures, learn the origins of current styles of movement and costume, and get a striptease lesson using a common bath towel!

Jo Weldon began working in strip joints in Atlanta in 1980. She toured as a headlining feature stripper in the early 1990s. In the mid-1990s she joined the international neo-burlesque community. She is the founder of the New York School of Burlesque and author of The Burlesque Handbook, and has been a volunteer at The Burlesque Hall of Fame since 2004. She is a founding team member of BurlyCon and operates The Master Class in Burlesque at Coney Island USA. She continues to teach striptease, burlesque, and sex workers' fashion history -- and you can still find her stripping on stage every now and then!

Ms. Weldon has been a sex workers' rights activist and advocate for over 30 years, speaking with legislators, academics, and the public to promote the human and labor rights of erotic professionals in every sector. She is currently a scholar in residence at the Center for Research in the Humanities at The New York Public Library, where she is studying the intersections of sex work with fashion and culture.
